Easy Bobotie Recipe
The Ultimate Bobotie Recipe
COOKS: 4 - 6 Servings
Ingredients:
- Bobotie Sachet/Spice Mix of your choice.
- 500g mutton or beef mince.
- 1 thick slice bread.
- 1½ cups milk.
- 1 large onion, chopped.
- 1 tsp crushed garlic.
- ½ tsp grated ginger root.
- Butter or oil for frying.
- 2 eggs.
- Juice of ½ lemon.
- ½ tsp salt
- ⅓ cup sultanas or raisins
- ⅓ cup slivered almonds (optional)
- ⅓ cup of Mrs Balls Chutney (original)
Instructions:
1.Prepare Bread Mixture:
- Soak bread in half the milk. Squeeze out and retain excess milk.
- Crumble bread and mix with mince together with spices (from the top layer of seasoning).
2. Sauté Aromatics:
- Sauté onion, garlic, and ginger in butter with spices (from the second layer of seasoning).
- Set aside when golden.
3.Cook Mince:
- Braise meat until color changes. Remove from heat, then add fried onion, 1 egg, lemon juice, salt, half the remaining milk, sultanas, almonds, and chutney.
- Mix well.
4. Assemble and Layer:
- Pour the mixture into a greased oven dish.
- Beat together 1 egg and remaining milk, then pour over the meat mixture.
5.Add Bay Leaves (Optional):
- Press bay leaves (third layer) or fresh lemon leaves into the bobotie.
- Sprinkle with spices (from the bottom layer of seasoning).
6. Bake:
- Bake at 180°C until golden brown (approximately 30 minutes).
Serving Suggestion:
Enjoy with yellow rice, fruit chutney, and cooked vegetables for a classic South African meal!
